History of Fredericksburg Food & Wine
For more than three decades, the Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival has celebrated the culinary traditions, wineries, and agricultural roots that define the Texas Hill Country.
The festival began in 1991 when Gillespie County was home to just one winery—Bell Mountain Winery, founded by Bob Oberhellman. Bob envisioned an event that would showcase the region’s emerging wine industry and help introduce visitors to the flavors of the Hill Country. The City of Fredericksburg embraced the idea, and the Market Square Redevelopment Commission launched the festival as a community fundraiser to support improvements to Market Square.
– From the beginning, the mission was simple – celebrate the people who grow, make, and serve the food and wine that make this region special.
Over the years, the event evolved alongside the rapidly expanding Texas wine industry. Breweries joined the festival in 2011, reflecting the growth of Texas craft beverages and further broadening the celebration of Hill Country hospitality.
In 2024, the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce assumed stewardship of the festival, ushering in a new chapter. With expanded partnerships, elevated programming, and a multi-day format, the festival was reimagined as a destination culinary experience designed to support local businesses while attracting visitors from across Texas and beyond.
Today, the Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival is more than a single event. It’s a series of curated culinary experiences—including Restaurant Week, Preview Week, and the signature Festival Weekend—that highlight the region’s chefs, wineries, artisans, and vibrant hospitality culture.
At its heart, the festival remains true to its original purpose: celebrating the flavors, people, and traditions of the Texas Hill Country.
